WP4 – DIGITAL TWINS FOR WAT ER SYSTEMS UNDER CLIMATE CHANGE SCENARIOS
Objective
Work Package 4 aims to develop and implement digital twins of Water Networks (WNs) and Irrigation Systems (ISs). These virtual models simulate and optimize the systems’ behavior under current and projected climate scenarios. By integrating real-time monitoring and forecast data, WP4 supports adaptive and efficient water management strategies.
Methodology
The digital twins will be constructed using:
– Forecasts from AQUILA (WP3)
– Real-time monitoring data from the WSN (WP1)
– Georeferenced layouts and operational specifications of WNs and ISs
These models will:
– Simulate the dynamic performance of WNs and ISs in response to water availability forecasts
– Identify key monitoring points and refine network topologies
– Support strategic decisions for water allocation and irrigation planning
– Predict infrastructure performance and proactively identify potential issues
For ISs, the digital twin will include:
– Integration of SPAC (Soil–Plant–Atmosphere Continuum) data
– Evaluation of irrigation needs based on crop types and available resources
– Coordination with hydraulic models for precision irrigation
Field Validation
– Testbed 2 (TB2): Used for controlled lab-scale testing of digital twin models
– Pilot Systems 2 and 3 (PS2, PS3): Full-scale field implementation and feedback
