WP1 – MONITORING WITH SMART AND DISTRIBUTED SENSORS
Objective
Work Package 1 aims to design, implement, and deploy a smart Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) for real-time monitoring of groundwater (Hg), lake levels (Hl), and hydraulic parameters in Water Networks (WNs) and Irrigation Systems (ISs). This system supports data-driven modeling, management, and decision-making throughout the MORE4WATER project.
Methodology
– Development of an open-architecture WSN combining off-the-shelf and proprietary technologies
– Integration of low-power and long-range communication protocols (e.g., LoRa, LoRaWAN) capable of covering distances up to 20 km
– Design of energy-efficient nodes powered by renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic panels
– GPS-based timestamping and synchronization of sensor nodes
– Secure data transmission via encryption and authentication protocols
– Real-time monitoring of:
Groundwater levels (Hg)
Lake levels (Hl)
Flow, pressure and the pressure-control-valve statuses in WNs and Iss
Development of a user-friendly smartphone application for remote access and participatory citizen science
Field and Laboratory Validation
– TB1 (Lisbon, Portugal): Used to refine WSN architecture and validate component performance
– PS3 (Padua, Italy): Applied for full-scale field validation of groundwater and WNs monitoring
