WP3

WP3 – Forecasting Water Levels for Drought Mitigation and Climate Change Adaptation

Objective
Work Package 3 builds upon the AQUILA model developed in WP2 by enabling its application for predictive forecasting. The objective is to provide accurate, six-month forecasts of groundwater (Hg) and lake levels (Hl), supporting proactive decision-making for water distribution networks (WNs) and irrigation systems (ISs), especially under drought and climate change (CC) conditions.
Methodology
– AQUILA parameters will be periodically updated using real-time measurements of Hg and Hl from the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) developed in WP1.
– Seasonal forecasts from the ECMWF atmospheric model will provide inputs such as:
Precipitation
Evaporation
Soil moisture (Fg)
– These atmospheric forecasts, combined with updated AQUILA parameters, will be used to simulate the future evolution of groundwater and lake levels.
– Continuous comparison between predicted and observed data will ensure iterative model refinement.
Field Validation
– Pilot System 3 (PS3) in Padua will serve as the main validation environment.
– Forecasted values of Hg and Hl will be compared against WSN-acquired data to calibrate and improve AQUILA’s forecasting ability.
